Abstract

540,947. Non-return valves. HEYWOOD, C. F. May 3, 1940, No. 8002. [Class 135] A non-return valve particularly adapted for use with air or gas compressors has a frustoconical 3 or part-spherical head extending through the valve seat 2 and provided with a short stem 9 slidably mounted in a guide socket 5 which houses a loading spring 7. The guide stem may be reduced in diameter over most of its length and formed with a bead 8 to engage the socket. The guide socket which also acts as a stop to limit the opening movement of the valve is held against the bottom of a recess 10 by engagement with a conical surface 20 on a seat member 1 screwed into the main casing. Flats 15 and a peripheral groove 17 are formed on the member 5 to provide fluid passages leading to a conduit 19. In a modification the valve head is formed as a segment of a sphere with a cylindrical extension of less diameter than the seat aperture through which it passes. The overall axial length of the valve may be less than the outside diameter of the valve head.
