Abstract

517,634. Ball-and-float valves. PALSSON, B. Aug. 2, 1938, No. 22869. [Class 135] A cistern supply valve particularly adapted for use in water waste preventers is arranged so that the final closing movement of the valve is independent of the float. A hinged float 17, 18, 19 acts with lost motion directly on a lift valve member 7 closing against the flow and overbalanced against inlet pressure by a piston 15. This piston which is slightly larger in diameter than the inlet passage works in a cylinder 14 connected to the inlet by an axial passage in the valve member and piston. A still larger piston may be employed, in which case some. form of braking device such as a roll packing is fitted. The valve casing may also house a loose ball valve normally held to its seat by water pressure but adapted to open and admit atmosphere should suction occur in the inlet conduit. To avoid shocks an air chamber may be fitted to the cylinder 14 or the cylinder may be extended and an additional spring-loaded piston fitted.
