Abstract

561,306. Variable-speed belt gearing. MOORE, A. H. Jan. 6, 1943, No. 262. [Classes 80 (i) and 80 (ii)] In variable-speed belt gearing a pair of driving pulleys 28, 29, loose on a countershaft 16 are alternatively clutchable thereto by a key pivoted at 36 to the shaft 16 and having wings 37, 38, engageable with slots in the pulleys. A spring 39 biasses the key into engagement with the pulley 29. To disengage the wing 37, and engage 38 with the pulley 28 a button 41 is moved axially so that a coned portion 40 of a plunger 42 will tilt the key. A cylindrical portion of the plunger holds the key in its new position. As shown, the pulleys 28, 29, are belt driven from a motor shaft 24 and the countershaft 16 has a stepped' pulley 15 for driving a machine shaft 12. The countershaft is supported by arms 19 pivoted at 20 to a bracket 21. A projection 46 on the arm 19 engages a slot 45 in a hand lever 44 pivoted at 48 to the bracket 21. Before operating the button 41 all the belts are slackened by moving the lever 44 clockwise so thatthe projection 46 moves to the bottom of the slot 45. The normal belt tension may be adjusted by mounting the pivot 48 on a bracket 47 pivoted at 50 and secured to the bracket 21 by a pin- and-slot fastening 51, 52.
