560,252. Auxiliary air - admission; valves ; actuating Bowden - mechanism. WHALLEY, S. Sept. 21, 1942, No. 13263. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIX and XXXI] An auxiliary air-inlet valve comprises a flange member 1 adapted to be secured in the induction pipe and having a box-like extension 2 on opposite sides of which are mounted two rotary discs 10 adapted for simultaneous actuation and having ports 13 adapted to register with ports 4 in the box 2. The valve is fully opened when using the engine as a brake by pulling a knob 26, Fig. 3, of the Bowden wire 21 against the action of spring 19 until a collar 42 is engaged by a spring-catch 41. The knob normally bears against a member 29 screwed in to a sleeve 30 slidable in a bracket member 28. When the member 29, being fully screwed in is pulled out till the sleeve is caught by a spring-catch 31, the valve is still closed and may then be partially opened by screwing out the member 29 to admit extra air for normal running. In another form, Fig. 4, spring-catches are dispensed with, and the actuating-knob 44 is adjustable on the rod 37 to determine whether the valve be partially open or fully closed when the knob is released by the operator. The valve may be actuated by an electromagnet controlled by a pushbutton on the dashboard.
