Abstract

383,753. Auxiliary air admission. ARKLEY, W., 386, Post Office Place, Melbourne, and WALEY, T. S., 29, Grey Street, St. Kilda, both in Australia. Dec. 1, 1931, No. 33315. [Class 7 (ii).] A valve 2 controlling the supply of extra air to the induction pipe, is normally opened conjointly with the main throttle valve, but is locked closed by a pawl 6 when the engine is cold. The pawl is pivoted at 7 and lifted through adjustable linkage 12, 26 A by the expansion of a bimetallic strip 26 clamped to the exhaust pipe ; a hole 11 allows a hand control to be attached to the pawl. The valve is normally operated from the throttle control rod 24 through a rod 18 and a lost-motion device comprising adjustable stops 19, 21, a spring 20 and a sliding connection 15 pivoted to an arm 1 of the valve 2. Air enters through a filter 33 and crank-chamber vapours, steam or damp air may be added at 35, 36. The device is specially arranged for attachment to existing engines.
