Abstract

191,302. Stockman, W. B., East, E. K., and Morton, B. S. Feb. 14, 1922. Closure members, sliding. - In an extra air valve device for internal-combustion engines of the kind wherein air from a heater is drawn by engine suction into the induction pipe through a valve operable in unison with the carburettor throttle valve, the air valve is individually movable to open position when the throttle valve is closed. A second air control valve movable to position to cut off the hot air and to admit cold air is also provided. As shown, air from a heater secured to the exhaust manifold passes through a pipe 19 and valve casing 20, 34 to a distributor 53 adapted to be clamped between the carburettor and the induction pipe. Sliding in the casing 20 is a squared control valve 24 provided with a straight through passage 25 for hot air, and a right-angle passage 26 opening through one side and the bottom face of the valve, and adapted, when brought into alignment with an inlet 23 in the casing 20 to admit cold air. The valve 24 is adjusted from the steering post by a wire 31. Sliding in the casing 34 is a square valve 37 provided with a series of graduated holes 40, and attached by a spring 42 to the throttleoperating rod 52 which is also attached by a spring 50 to a lever 45 engaging the throttle lever. As the throttle is opened, the holes 40 are brought successively into alignment with the air passage. The valve 37 is also provided with a hole 41 which, by a further movement of the rod 52 when the throttle is closed, is brought into alignment with the air passage to admit air for cooling or braking. In a modification of the control valve 24, the right-angle passage 26 opens through the bottom face and one end of the valve.
