Abstract

577,799. Air intakes for carburetters. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and CUTTS, J. March 25, 1943, No. 4848. [Class 7 (iii)] An air intake for a carburettor comprises three air inlets, one of which supplies heated air, and a control means, adapted to adjust a valve selectively to one of two positions to permit either of the other two air supplies to pass to the engine and simultaneously to vary the freedom with which a valve automatically controlling the inlet of heated air, operates. Cold air is supplied to a common intake tube 16 for a. carburetter 14 either from a forwardly facing scoop 17 when a visor-shaped valve 25 is in the position shown or through a pssage 18 housing a filter 22 when the visor 25 is turned anti-clockwise through 90‹, the visor in either case directing the air into the tube 16. Air heated by passage around the engine cylinders enters the tube 16 past a flap valve 26 normally held closed by a spring 32 connected at its remote end to one arm 31 of a lever of which the other arm 28 is connected to the control lever 30 of the visor 25. As shown, the spring 32 exerts very light pressure on the flap valve 26 and the valve opens to admit the stream of heated air, but when the visor 25 is turned to admit filtered air, the tension of the spring 32 is increased and the heated air can no longer open the valve. When the spring 32 is operating lightly, it may be overridden and the valve be opened manually by a control lever acting through a spring having a tension intermediate between the tensions of the spring 32. in its two operative positions. As shown, the passage from the scoop 17 through the tube 16 increases in cross section towards the carburettor to convert the dynamic pressure of the air at the scoop to a static pressure in the tube 16. This pressure resists the opening of the valve 26, but if the scoop becomes clogged with ice &c. this pressure falls off, the valve 26 opens more readily and additional heated air is supplied to the engine.
