[Class 97 (i)] A singlet lens is rendered substantially anastigmatic, and is corrected for spherical aberration and coma, by constructing it in accordance with the equation and by aspherising one or both surfaces, L being the distance in the medium of the. lens at which the image formed by the front surface is spaced from the surface, N and N<SP>1</SP> being the refractive indices respectively of the medium in which the lens is inserted and of the lens material, and the other symbols having the significances shown on the drawing.
