555,521. Valves and valve gear. FRASER, P. L. R. March 20, 1942, No. 3694. [Class 7 (vi)] In order to provide ports extending entirely around the cylinder walls, and yet so as not to be overrun by the piston on the working stroke, one or more sleeve valves D, without ports, are provided in an enlarged bore of the cylinder, and arranged to . be moved downwards to open ports H after these have been passed by the piston. As shown, the sleeve D is actuated, against the force of a spring E, by engagement of the piston with a channel G formed by an annular flange F on the sleeve, and acting as a dashpot. Cam or other means may be used, instead of the piston, to actuate the sleeve. The sleeve may work over balls arranged in tracks ; and when these are disposed helically, the sleeve is given angular movement, so as to be carried axially by the helices, for example by oblique slots in the piston skirt engaging studs inside the sleeve.
