554,379. Valves for air compressors. RILEY, G. Dec. 29, 1941, No. 16738. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] A sleeve valve for engines, compressors &c., is formed with a longitudinal slit 32 extending from one end to near the other end so as to allow expansion and contraction, and is also formed with a number of small radial holes 42 to reduce the pressure of the valve against the cylinder wall. The slit may be zigzagged at 39. Longitudinal distortion of the sleeve is prevented by a lock ring 34 fitted in a groove 33. An expanding ring 38 may be fitted in the upper end of the sleeve, which may control the exhaust ports, while sleeve ports 17, 18 control the inlet. Grooves 41 may be provided in the outer face of the sleeve to retain oil. Small grooves or depressions may also connect some of the holes 42. In a modification, instead of a single slit, there may be several slits formed along the sleeve out of line with one another.
