Abstract

554,029. Pipe couplings. HERBERT, H. C. Feb. 11, 1942, No. 1801. [Class 99 (i)] A coupling for connecting fittings of various kinds to a lead pipe 10 without the use of solder compirses a collar 11 adapted to be slipped over the end of the pipe and having an external shoulder 12, against which abuts an internal flange 14 on a nut 13 which engages a tubular screwed plug 17, the end of the pipe being expanded by driving in a tubular bulbous thimble 16, so that conical mouths on the collar 11, and plug 17 find a bearing on the expanded part when the nut is screwed up. Means are provided for holding the thimble in place during the screwing-up, for example by closing the end of the pipe over the bulbous part of the thimble. The plug is screwed at 18 for the attachment of the fitting.
