Abstract
553,176. Magneto-strictive vibrators. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and ROUND, H. J. Nov. 7, 1941, No. 14373. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Groups XVI, XV and XL] An engraving or like tool or the work to be operated upon is carried by a rod or block of magneto-strictive material set into vibration by the magneto-strictive effect of high frequency electric oscillations, the movement of the rod or block being substantially in the direction of the waves. In one pencil-like device of Fig. 1, the engraving point H is attached directly to a rod R of magneto-strictive material such as laminated nickel, gripped at a nodal point P by a member G secured to a permanent magnet M in the form of a handle. Coils K, K are connected to a source of high frequency electric oscillations. In a modification, Fig. 3, the engraving point H is carried by a steel rod RS directly secured to a block B of magnetostrictive material operated in a manner similar to the rod R of Fig. 1. In a further form, the engraving point is connected to a wire attached to the end of the block B, and in a further form, an ordinary engraving point may be used in conjunction with a work support secured to a block such as B. The tools may be mounted on a pantograph. Light and shade effects may be produced by modifying the amplitude of the electric oscillations by any suitable means such as by a radio or land line channel.
