[Also in Groups VI, XXIII and XXXIX] The nickel laminations 10 of a water-cooled magnetostrictive generator in a percussive drill (see Group XXIII) are sandwiched between sheets 12 of rubberbacked glass fibre and are fitted with a foam rubber cap 18 which reduces the loading effect of the water. The laminations are an integral number of half-wavelengths in length at the operating frequency and may be wider at one end than at the other as shown to provide vibrations of greater amplitude at the narrow end. The lower end of the generator and a holder for the cutting or abrading tool of the drill are interconnected by a coupling 4 (see Group XXXIX), the generator and the coupling being welded or soldered together.
