552,626. Fire-extinguishers. MATHER & PLATT, Ltd., and MARSLAND, S. W. Feb. 16, 1942, No. 2060. [Class 47 (ii)] In a chemical fire-extinguisher, the cap a upon the holder b for the acid container c is formed with a chamber d to accommodate a packing ring e which has a sliding frictional fit on the usual operating spindle f. A cap g upon the chamber d provides an upper guide for the spindle. Normally, the packing ring is in its lower position as shown, providing a vent to the atmosphere from the interior of the extinguisher via clearance passages h, i, but when the spindle is operated to fracture the acid container c, the gas pressure generated carries the spindle outwards and lifts the ring e to its upper position to make a sealing joint with the cap g, and so close the clearance passage i.
