Abstract

535,840. Fire-extinguishers. PYRENE CO., Ltd., and WOODS, W. R. Jan. 2, 1940, No. 116. [Class 47 (ii)] In a portable fire-extinguisher of the type described in Specification 294,392, [Class 47 (ii)], the seal for the discharge nozzle comprises a flexible member which, because of its flexibility, allows the nozzle to be maintained closed while the operating spindle is making part of its stroke. In the form shown, the extinguisher comprises outer and inner containers 1, 2 for the liquids to be mixed to form foam, the inner container being adapted to be closed by a valve 7 at the lower reduced end 19 of an operating spindle 12, while the outer one is closed by a cap 9 which holds in position a rubber disc valve 10. This disc is formed with a central hole 11 larger than the portion 19 of the spindle, but smaller than its upper portion 12, the arrangement being such that, when the operating spindle is lowered, the enlarged part of the spindle first abuts against the disc 10 to shut off the discharge of foam, and further movement closes the valve 7. the rubber disc 10 being slightly deformed dur- ing this movement. In modified constructions, the upper valve 10 is cup-shaped, and may be carried by the operating spindle.
