Abstract
551,759. Timing ignition ; regulating. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., HALFORD, F. B., and CATFORD, A. L. Sept. 5, 1941, No. 11346. [Classes 7 (iv) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Group XXIX] Variations in the ignition timing are effected either bv movement of a hand lever or automatically by movements derived from a capsule sensitive to fluid pressure, the change-over taking place automatically when and continuing while the throttle is fully opened. As shown, a hand lever A is mounted on a rotatable shaft A<SP>1</SP> connected by an arm B and link C to an arm D on the shaft of the throttle D <SP>2</SP>. An arm B<SP>1</SP> on the shaft A<SP>1</SP> is connected by a link E to a bell-crank F pivoted on the rod G of a piston G<SP>1</SP> movable in a cylinder G<SP>2</SP>. The arm F<SP>2</SP> of the bell-crank F acts on the spindle M of a capsule K, a pin M<SP>1</SP> on the spindle engaging a Z-shaped slot N in a lever N<SP>1</SP> pivoted at N2. The lever actuates the valve of a servo device O acting through a shaft P, quadrants P\ Q and a lever and link Q<SP>2</SP> on the cage Q<SP>3</SP> of a bevel pinion Q<SP>4</SP> meshing with bevel wheels R2, Sl through which is driven the shaft S of a distributor T and magneto U. Normally the handle A acts through the mechanism described to adjust the timing of the shaft S. When the throttle D <SP>2</SP> is fully opened, the arm D moves a valve J whereby pressure liquid is admitted through a pipe H to depress the piston G<SP>1</SP> against a spring G<SP>3</SP>. The arm F<SP>2</SP> ceases to act on the spindle M, which is then actuated by the capsule K in dependence on changes of atmospheric pressure, the pin M<SP>1</SP> acting in the lower part of the slot N. Modifications in the details of construction are indicated in the Provisional Specification.
