Abstract

551,169. Course indicating instruments. SMITH & SONS (MOTOR ACCESSORIES), Ltd., S., and MEREDITH, F.. W. Aug. 8, 1941, No. 10113. [Classes 97 (ii) and 97 (iii)] A course-indicating instrument for a craft comprises two indicating members, one a direction 'indicator and the other a deviation indicator, driven in opposite directions. As shown the direction indicator consists of a compass card 10 while the deviation indicator consists of a pivoted hand or pointer 16 fixed parallels 20 assisting in indicating the deviation. The compass card 16 is driven from a repeater motor 13, which follows the distant master compass, by means of a gear 11 engaging a gear 12 fast on the hollow shaft 14 of the compass card 10. The deviation pointer 16 is carried by a shaft 15 driven in the opposite direction by the gear 12 through planet wheels 18 and sun wheel 17. Setting is .accomplished by a hand crank 27, gear 25, idler gear 24 and gear 21 the hub of which is rotatably mounted on the hollow shaft 14 and carries the planet-wheels 18.
