Abstract

489,525. Testing balance of rotary bodies. KUCHENMEISTER, C. W. May 21, 1937, No.14146. [Class 106 (ii)] In addition to the usual work-piece rotating arrangements and compensating mechanism, two pointers or equivalents are arranged to be oscillated by the movements of the compensating mechanism and the work-piece supports respectively, and the two pointers are observed stroboscopically. The rotor to be tested is mounted in adjustable bearings on a cradle a pivoting about an axis b. The free end of the cradle is supported by a spring e and its oscillations are transmitted to a pointer c moving over a scale d. The cradle is also connected to a lever f having a weight h at the free end. The rotor is rotated by an electric motor i through gears j, k, differential gear l, m, n, and a flexible coupling o. The carrier p for the planet wheels m can be adjusted angularly from a hand wheel q through a gear r the setting being read off a scale s. An eccentric t driven by the motor i oscillates a lever u about its fulcrum v. A roller w can be moved along the lever u by bevel and screw gear z, y from a hand wheel x and its position indicated by a pointer 3. Parallel to the lever u is a lever 4 rocking about a fulcrum 5 and carrying the fulcrum g of the lever f. The free end of the lever is pressed down on the roller w by a spring 6. The oscillations of the lever u are conveyed to a pointer 7 coaxial with pointer c. These pointers are observed simultaneously stroboscopically 9 through an eye-piece 8 having an aperture and rotated from the motor i at a speed nearly the same as the rotor. By turning the handle q the balancing oscillations can be brought into phase with the natural oscillations of the work-piece and then by turning the hand wheel x the oscillations can be adjusted until the crank and pointer c are brought to rest. The plane and extent of unbalance can be read off from scales s and z respectively.
