Abstract
474,519. Balancing forces in machines. SCHENCK EISENGIESSEREI UND MASCHINENFABRIK, DARMSTADT GES., C., and OHLY, C. May 6, 1937, No. 12994. [Class 80 (iv)] [Also in Group XIX] Relates to machines in which counter forces produced by masses on an auxiliary shaft at a constant distance from the shaft, can be adjusted while in motion to effect balance and consists in providing that the supporting means for the auxiliary shaft can be turned so that the effective component of the constant centrifugal force of the masses is changed in accordance with the amount of turning motion. The disc 1, Fig. 1, is provided with an unbalanced mass 2 and rotates about an axis 6 which is held in position by a link 3 and bar 4. The end of the link 3 can be adjusted along a track 5 and fixed at any point, while the bar 4 leads to the oscillating part of a balancing machine. Movement of the disc under the centrifugal forces of the mass 2 can only occur in the direction AB and as this motion can only to taken up by the bar 4, the latter moves under the component of the force in the direction of the bar 4. This varies from " zero " when the link 3 is in line with the bar to the full amount when the link 3 is at right-angles to the bar 2 and this may, by varying the position of the end along the track 5, be used to equalize the disturbing forces of the balancing machine. In a modification, instead of the end of the link 3 being adjustable in a slot, it is pivotally carried in a fork supported by a linkage which may be adjusted angularly. In the form shown in Figs. 3, 4, the disc 9 with eccentric masses 10 is rotatably mounted in a frame 15 and driven by a bevel gear 11, 12 through a flexible shaft. The frame 15 is pivoted in a stirrup 16 pivoted about an axis 17 and connected to the part 19 of a balancing machine. In the form shown in Fig. 5, each standard 21 of a balancing machine has pivoted thereto a transverse member 23 supported by a spring 24. The rotor 25 to be balanced is carried as shown and the disc 28 with eccentric masses is mounted to rotate in a frame 27 pivoted to the other end of the member 23. Here, the centrifugal force is a maximum when the plane of the disc is vertical. The direction of the rod-work transmitting the counter force to the machine may be displaced to effect balance in a similar way..
