702,918. Polishing diamonds. MONNICKENDAM, A., and MONNICKENDAM (DIAMOND MERCHANTS & CUTTERS), Ltd., A. Oct. 19, 1951 [Jan. 30, 1951], No. 2333/51.. Class 60 A diamond-holder in a machine (not shown) for polishing the girdle of a diamond 1 comprises a pair of pivots 2 of which one can be rotated about its axis to rotate the diamond. The diamond is gripped between the pivots 2 by turning a screw 4 to displace a shaft 3 on which one of the pivots is journalled, the thrust produced by the screw 4 being transmitted through the coupling 5 on a spindle 6 supporting the other pivot and reacted by a plate 8. An arm 11, fixed to a shaft 13 journalled in the tailstock 16 of the machine, supports the shaft 3 and the spindle 6 with the diamond 1 offset from the axis of the shaft 13 so that by driving a pinion 18 fixed on the shaft 13 the diamond may be planetated. The diamond is also rotated in engagement with a rotating spring- pressed lapping wheel 20 by the spindle 6 which is driven through a pinion 19, a shaft 14, bevel gears 10 and gears 7, 9. A balance weight 12 is provided on the arm 11.
