Abstract

596,226. Polishing glass. PILKINGTON BROS., Ltd., WALDRON, F. B., and GRIFFIN, J. H. Sept. 13, 1944, No. 17511. [Class 60] In apparatus for simultaneously polishing both faces of a horizontal travelling strip of glass which is fed by rollers between coaxial upper and lower polishing tools, the latter supporting the glass during polishing and comprising a number of pads, each of which is brought as the tool rotates to the edges of the strip of glass, the pads are so mounted on horizontal arms that, in an appropriate position of the tool, the arm can be swung about a vertical pivot so that the pad projects wholly or substantially beyond the edge of the glass, to allow replacement of the felt or cleaning, scraping, &c. thereof. In one form, Fig. 2, the pad 10 is rotatable about part 11 in an arm 7 having a part 8 fitting in the end 9 of an arm 6 of sub-frame which is rotatably mounted at 5 on arm 4 of main frame carried by vertical driving shaft; a screw 13 engages a groove in the part 8 to prevent undesired rotation of the arm 7 ; the pad can be vertically adjusted by screw 18. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4, the pin 15 has a threaded portion 17 engaging an internally-threaded sleeve 20 having feathers 21 engaging grooves 22 in the sleeve 8 ; the top of the pin 15 carries a bevel gear 23 meshing with a bevel gear 25 on a shaft 26 passing radially through the sleeve 8 of the arm 7. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the sub-frame turns on a vertical pivot 5 fixed to an arm 35 having a vertical pivot 36 turning in the cupped end of the arm 4 of the main frame. The arm 35 is normally locked by a key 37 ; on freeing this, the arm 35 and the sub-frame carried thereby can be swung outwardly so that one of the pads is free of the glass. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the tool comprises a main frame only, having four arms 4, each carrying a single pad 10 ; each pad is rotatably mounted on an arm 7 pivoted to the arm 4.
