Abstract

596,227. Polishing glass. PILKING- TON BROS., Ltd., and WALDRON, F. B. Sept. 13, 1944, No. 17512. [Class 60] In apparatus for simultaneously polishing both faces of a travelling strip of glass, apparatus for polishing the undersurface of a horizontal travelling strip of glass comprising a polishing tool in which a plurality of polishing pads, each adapted to turn on a vertical axis, is supported on a frame adapted to rotate on a vertical axis, is characterised by two independent means for moving each pad vertically, one adapted to drop the pad vertically sufficiently far from the glass to give ready access to its operative surface and to return it to its previous position without disturbing the adjustment, while the other pads remain in operative position supporting the glass, and the other adapted to give final adjustment of the pad accurately into the plane in which the other pads support the glass. In a machine having coaxial upper and lower polishing tools between which the glass strip 8 is moved by driving rollers (not shown), the tool for polishing the undersurface comprises, Fig. 1, a main frame 2 on a driving shaft 1 and having three arms 3 to each of which is rotatably secured a sub-frame having three arms 5 to each of which is rotatably secured a pad 6. Each pad 6, Fig. 2, has a central pin 9 rotatable in a sleeve 10 which is slidably but non-rotatably mounted in a tubular member 11 carried by the sub-frame arm 5. The sleeve 10 receives the screwed shank 12 of a member 13 which rests on the splined end 14 of a rod 15 connected with a crank-pin 16, so that on rotation of the crank-shaft by a handle (not shown) the sleeve is lowered, due to the weight of the parts so that the pad is clear of the glass, thus permitting scraping of the felt covering 7 if this has become caked with rouge, or renewal if worn and damaged. On reverse operation of the crank, the pad is returned to its original position. For adjustment of the height of the pad, e.g. when a felt has been renewed, the member 13 is formed as a long pinion which is in mesh with a bevel gear 20 rotatable by handle 23. ‹
