rlhe present invention relates to glass Yedging apparatus and more particularly to novel means for maintaining the glass being edged closed an edging machine including a, supporting framework .designated in' its entirety i 5. and upon which is, carried arranged channel members" 6 in proper contact with the edging tool.
In the glass surfacing art, it is customary7 to use a continuous type of machine for the grinding and/or finishing of the edges f glass sheets. Broadly speaking, with such a machine, a number of spaced sheets of glass y to be edged are vertically disposed in spaced relation relative to one another and passedv substantially horizontally over and in contact with one or a lurality of surfacing elements whereby to rst grind and then polish thesheets. It has been found, however, that with glass sheets of certain contours, diiiiculty is experienced in the moving ofthe sheets over the surfacing elements in that there is a tendency for the said sheets to tilt forwardly or rearwardly or otherwise get out of proper contacting relationship4 with said surfacing elements.
It is, therefore, an important object of this invention to provide novel and Vimproved means for use upon edging machines of the above character which will function to maintain the glass sheets in proper operative relationship with respect to the surfacing elements.
Anotherimportant object of the invention is to provide means engaging the upper edges of the glass lsheets which rwill serve to maincondition with respect to the surfacing elements than heretofore.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become more apparent during the course of the vfollowing description `when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Mounted above the runways 7 is an endless sprocket. chain 13 trained at each end of its loopy about asprocket14, ythe upper runor flight-of the chain being supported upon and vsliding over a stationary supporting member or table y15. The upper edges of thelsi-de portions of the channel-members 6 constitute guide rails alongwhich pusher blocks 16 are adapted to beslid, these pusher Vblocks being suitablyl connected to and driven-forwardly bythe lower flighty of thesprocket chain 13. The pusher blocks are preferably provided with a-plurality of slots-.within which the rear vertical edges of the glass sheets 17 fit so that the said pusher blocks, therefore, serve to advance the glass sheet'for'war-dly in the direction indicated by the larrow in Fig.- 1.

Although 'composite or safety glass has been illustrated inv Fig. 2, yet it will be readily apparent that this machine may be used for grinding the edges of plate glass as well as other flat sheets or plates. f Y

rIhis will serve to exert a braking or retarding action upon the roller and will thereby prevent said roller from freely rotating upon shaft 32. While in some cases it may be desirable to permit free rotation of the roller, yet it has been found by actual experience that with some sizes and shapes of glass sheets, the braking or retarding of the roller in a manner to prevent free rotation thereof is of considerable importance, and that much more satisfactory edging results are obtained than where the roller is allowed to freely rotate. As set forth above, there is a tendency for the glass sheets to tip or tilt either forwardly or backwardly during the surfacing thereof depending upon the profile of the glass, and it has been found that by preventing free rotation of the roller so as to provide greater friction between the rollerl and glass sheets, the said sheets are held much steadier, are maintained in a. truer condition,
and the tendency thereof to tip or tilt is eliminated.
It is to be understood that the form of the invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferred embodiment of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
I claim:
1. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of grinding means upon which the glass is partially supported on edge while being ground, means cooperating with the grinding means for guidingly supporting said plate of glass dur-V ing grinding thereof, a roller engaging the upper edge of the glass plate for maintaining it in a vertical position and in engagement with the grinding means, and means for preventing free rotation of said roller.
2. In a machine for grinding an edge of a plate of glass, the combination of grinding means upon which the glass is partially supported on edge while being ground, means cooperating with the grinding means for guidingly supporting said plate of glassduring grinding thereof, a roller engaging the upper edge of the glass plate for maintaining it in a vertical position and in engagement with the grinding means, and frictional means for retarding the rotation of said roller.
