Abstract

327,529. Avery, Ltd., W. & T., and Holroyd, S. March 1, 1929. Testing balance of rotary bodies. - The body to be balanced or the shaft upon which it is mounted is supported at each end on bearings carried by the steelyard or lever of one of a pair of independent weighing mechanisms the readings of which when the steelyard or lever is in the horizonal position, enable the amount and angular disposition of the want of balance to be determined. The vertical standards 5, 9 of two similar weighing-machines 7, 11 are mounted at the ends of a base 4, the standard 9 being traverseable on runways by means of a screw 8. The standards 5, 9 are provided with bearings on which rest the fulcrum knife edges of a pair of weighing levers 12, 13 the other ends of which are connected to the connecting rods of the machine 7, 11. Each lever is provided with bearings 14, 15 in which are mounted the knife edges 16, 17 of rockers 18, 19, such knife edge being at right angles to the knife edges of the levers 12, 13. The rockers are provided with V- notches to receive the ends of the crankshaft 20 to be balanced, the axis of the part 20 being in the same horizontal plane as the knife edges. The exact magnitude of the out-of-balance mass can be obtained by assuming correction planes and taking moments about the two ends in the known manner. In a modification, each weighing lever is fulcrummed in bearings carried by tension rods pivoted to an even-armed beam, the fulcrum of which may be raised or lowered as required, said weighing levers being adapted to be connected to tension springs embodying an indicating mechanism.
