Abstract

794,469. Map &c. measurers. PETION, L. J. May 25, 1956, No. 16297/56. Class 106(2). The wheel 20 of a map measurer drives a rubber band 24 passing around pulleys 28, 26 and having an indicator mark, and a series of different scales is carried on a paper roll 36 wound on shafts 38, 40 with pinions 42, 44 engaging a ring gear 55 in the inside of a cap 52 so that by turning the cap the appropriate scale can be selected. The instrument comprises a wheel housing 10 having a slot 14, the slot having an enlarged inner portion 16, the measuring wheel 20 protruding through this - slot, a hub 22 on this wheel located inside the housing, another wheel 28 inside the enlarged portion, a transparent barrel 30 carried by the housing, and a bracket 46 at the other end of the barrel holding another wheel 26 mounted on a shaft 48. A circular band 24 of rubber is mounted over the hub of the wheel 20 and the rims of other two wheels 48 and 60, and a roll of paper imprinted with scales 36 has each end mounted and rolled on to shafts 38, 40 seated with one end in the wheel housing and the other end protruding through the wheel bracket 46. A mask 56 inserted in the barrel is shaped to leave a portion of the barrel uncovered for visibility of one of the scales and the indicator band. The band has two indicators spaced a scale length apart.
