Abstract

Protractors.-An instrument for use in plotting courses on a map or chart comprises a case 11 containing two parallel spools 12, 13 on which the chart is wound so as to extend over the top of the case, the spools being geared together by sprockets 14 and a chain 15, so that the chart can be wound or unwound by a wheel 16, tension being maintained by a spring 18. The sides of the case 11 are provided with guides 20, 21 on which are slidably mounted carries 22 supporting a bar 23 and rod 25. An endless band 27<a> passes round rollers 26 and is wrapped round the bar 23. Mounted on the rod 25 is a carrier 26<a> on which is rotatably mounted a disc 27 of celluloid &c. carrying compass graduations and a pointer 28 which can be set to any desired position on the disc. Secured to the edge of the disc is a carrier 29 in which is slidably mounted a graduated ruler 30.
