[Class 97 (i)] Apparatus for comparing objects, for example for repetitive inspection of manufactured objects. comprises means for producing superposed images of two or more objects in the field of one eyepiece, means for illuminating each object by a beam differing in colour from the other beams so that differences between the objects are revealed by colour fringes on the superposed images, and means for adjusting the relative positions of carriers for the objects. As shown. two plates 27, 28, each carrying an object, are provided beneath two objectives 29, 30 carried by a casing 31 containing reffectors producing superposed images of the objects in the field of one eyepiece 32. Each object is illuminated by a lamp 1 and condenser 9, and a colour filter 5 and diaphragm 7 are provided for each lamp; the lamps may be controlled by separate switches 49, 50, and the two filters may be complementary. Each plate 27 may be adjustable in perpendicular directions, and rotatably, on a tube 46 vertically adjustable by means of a pin 44 engaging an internal thread on a rotatable sleeve 47 ; the objectives may be fixed, and focusing effected by vertical adjustment of the plates 27, 28. In use, the objects are focused -and the plates 27, 28 are moved until the best superposition of the images is obtained. Differences between the objects are revealed by colour fringes, and the colour of any fringe determined in which of the objects the difference occurs. The lamps may be replaced by daylight, or the reflectors may be arranged between the objects and a single objective.
