Abstract

729,259. Optical systems. RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. March 31, 1953 [April 21, 1952], No. 8926/53. Class 97 (1). In an optical system having a plurality of objectives selectively positionable on the axis of the system to form an image of an object upon an image plane, an optical image-relaying system is placed between the said plane and the objective and includes means for controlling the intensity of the light passing to the image plane. The invention is described with reference to the three-colour television system shown which includes light-sensitive tubes 21, 22, 23 on which differently coloured images are formed by light from one of a number of objectives 12, 13, 14 divided by crossed dichroic reflectors 24. The objectives are mounted on a rotatable turret 11 and each is associated with a field lens 16, 17, 18, light from which passes to reflectors 27 inclined to the beam to correct astigmatic errors introduced by the dichroic reflectors 24. Light from the reflectors is collimated by a lens 19 and passed to a lens 20 forming the images on the tubes 21, 22, 23. Between these lenses is an iris diaphragm 28 adjustable from a distance by an electric motor 32 and which also operates a gear 37 moving a variable resistance 39 by which an indication of the size of the diaphragm aperture is given on an ammeter 44. In addition to or instead of the iris diaphragm a pair of rotatable or linearly movable density wedges may be provided between the lenses 19 and 20.
