Abstract

408,899. Microscopes. SCHMALTZ, G., 79, Frankfurter Strasse, Offenbach-on-Main, Germany. Nov. 10, 1933, No. 31308. Convention date, Nov. 11, 1932. Addition to 395,649. [Class 97 (i).] The parent Specification describes a method of examining the profiles of a surface by imaging a slit or knife-edge on the surface and examining the luminous boundary line by a microscope the axis of which is inclined to that of the illuminating rays. According to the present invention the observation system and the illumination system are so attached to the microscope stand as to be interchangeable so that the surface can be illuminated normally and viewed obliquely or vice versa. In Fig. 1 the stand is in the form of a spherical dome 1 having its centre in the surface to be examined, and provided with feet 2 resting on the said surface. A tube 5 screwed into an aperture 3 in the dome carries the illumination parts consisting of a lamp 7 and lenses 9, 10. Adjacent the lens 9 are two plates 11 separated by a slit the width of which can be varied by displacing the plates by knobs 13. A member 6 screwed into the tube carries a condenser 14 which, in conjunction with the lens 10, images the slit in the plane of the surface to be examined. The stand 1 is also formed with a meridional guide 4 in which is displaceably mounted a slide 17 having an aperture into which the microscope 19 is screwed. The external threads on the tubes 5, 19 are alike so that these two parts can be interchanged. In the form shown in Fig. 3 the condenser 14 and the microscope objective 22 are identical and both are screwed directly into the stand 24. The tubes 5, 19 are carried by a member 35 which is rotatable about an axis bisecting the angle between the axes of the illumination and observation systems. The stand is rotatably mounted in a ring 25 and is provided with a pointer 27 by which its adjustment can be indicated on a scale 28 on the ring. The ring 25 is mounted within a stationary ring 29 in such a way as to be adjustable in its own plane. To facilitate the examination of small objects the microscope may be placed on pillars 46 extending from a base 42 which has a central pillar 43 adjustably carrying a stage 45 on which the object 40 is placed. An additional fixed illuminator 37 may be mounted in the stand 24.
