Abstract

548,593. Facilitating starting. CROSS, R. C., and CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938), Ltd. May 15, 1941, No. 6266. [Class 7 (ii)] To facilitate the starting of an auxiliary or stand-by engine, on aircraft, vehicles, &c., the main and auxiliary engines, 1, 2, are enclosed in a housing 3 of insulating and preferably fireproof material, divided by a partition 4. Hot lubricating oil from the crank case of the main engine 1 is delivered by an engine-driven pump 10 through a pipe 11 to a heating annulus in the crankcase of the auxiliary engine, and returns to the tank 8 of the main engine through a pipe 12. A similar system warms the main engine by means of hot oil from the auxiliary engine when the latter is working.
