[Class 142 (ii)] In a loom having a stationary weft supply at one or both sides of the shed, the weft needles move simultaneously in opposite directions, and one at least of the needles moves beyond the middle of the shed. The needles are so operated that the needle introducing the weft into the shed enters the shed later than the needle receiving the introduced weft. Each needle, 10, 11 has two gripper members 12, 13, 14, 15 having nippers 17, 18 and spreading devices 21, 22 fixed on the slay serve to open the nipper towards the middle of the shed. In this form the weft to be transferred is disposed in a direction parallel to the direction of movement of the needles. In a modification, Fig. 5, a laterally bent hook member 35 mounted upon the transferring needle 33 holds the weft at right angles to the movement of the needles so that one pair of nippers does not have to pass through the other pair of nippers. A lateral projection 36 ensures that the weft is firmly held by each pair of nippers 33a, 34a. A hook 37 on the needle 34 serves to guide a weft introduced by the needle 34 from its side of the shed.
