Abstract

639,856. Tensioning and positioning weft in gripper-shuttle looms. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. June 6, 1947, No. 15016. Convention date, June 7, 1946. [Class 142 (ii)] A clamping device 16 seizes a weft thread, positions it, and causes a reduced clamping force to be applied to it to facilitate the formation of a selvage. When a weft thread 10 has been inserted into the shed 18, a cam 27 on a bell crank lever 25 is raised by a cam 23 on a shaft 22 and springs 29, 30 close clamping jaws 20, 21 before the thread is released from the shuttle. The clamping device is moved from position II to position I by a cam 45, roller 37 and a lever 36. A cam 46 presses down a needle 33 to reduce the spring clamping force and permit the doubling round of the end of the weft thread to form the selvage. The clamping force may be reduced at one or at both sides of the shed. The cam faces 27, 46 may be replaced by two separate cams each on separate levers and controlled by separate cams..By suitable arrangement of the cams on the shaft 22 different tensions may be applied to any particular weft thread.
