Abstract

547,885. Artificial filaments. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and SHARPLES, E. H. March 13, 1941, No. 3413. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial filaments are obtained by extruding viscose into an aqueous coagulating solution containing sulphuric acid and at least one metallic salt in presence of a compound containing the imidazoline group in which a hydrocarbon radical containing at least 9 carbon atoms is attached to the carbon atom which is situated between the two nitrogen atoms in the imidazoline ring. The imidazoline compound may be added to the viscose or to the coagulating solution. The compound used may be the hydrochloride of 2-undecyl-imidazoline, or the lauryl derivative of benzimidazol, i.e. 2- undecyl-benzimidazol. The imidazoline compound tends to reduce stoppages of the holes in the spinning nozzles and breakages of the filaments during their passage through the spinning bath and to the collecting bobbins. In an example, viscose is extruded into a solution of sulphuric acid containing sodium sulphate, zinc sulphate, and 0.02 per cent of 2-undecyl-imidazoline.
