Abstract

523,864. Artificial silk &c. COURTAULDS, Ltd., HEGAN, H. J., GIVENS, J. H., and ROSE, L. Jan. 17, 1939, Nos. 1597 and 32488. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial filaments are obtained by coagulating an extruded stream of viscose in an acid solution in presence of a proportion of an octyl alcohol which is so small as to have no substantial effect on the lustre of the filaments. The octyl alcohol may be dissolved in the viscose before the spinning operation in a proportion not greater than 0.04 per cent. of the viscose. The octyl alcohol may be added to the coagulating bath. An emulsifying or surface tension reducing substance may be added to the viscose or to the coagulating bath. Sodium salts of alkyl naphthalene sulphonic acids, Turkey red oil, and substances sold under the Registered Trade Marks " Monopol " oil. " Calsolene " oil, " Prestabit, " and " Nekal BX are specified. The use of octyl alcohol reduces the tendency for rings of finely divided material to be deposited in and around the jet orifices.
