Abstract

546,051. Artificial silk &c. COURTAULDS, Ltd., ROSE, L., and WHARTON, J. Dec. 24, 1940, No. 18094. [Class 2 (ii)] Artificial filaments are obtained by extruding, into a coagulating bath, preferably one containing sulphuric acid and at least one metallic sulphate, viscose containing a small proportion of a cation-active compound and also an anionactive compound in amount greater than the equivalent of the cation-active compound present. The presence of these compounds in the viscose reduces the tendency for the spinning jets to become clogged by precipitation of cellulose on the walls of the orifices. A solution containing the cation-active compound and excess of the anion-active compound may be obtained by taking an alkaline solution of anion-active compound and adding to it a quantity of cation-active compound such that a solution with no precipitate is obtained. The anion-active compound may be added to the viscose as such or a non-ionogenic compound which will hydrolyse in the presence of alkali to give an anion-active compound may be used. The cation-active compound may be octadecyl pyridinium bromide, lauryl pyridinium sulphate, dodecyl pyridinium sulphate, or oleyl amido ethyl diethylamine hydrochloride. The anionactive compound may be Turkey red oil or other sulphonated oil, a long-chain alkyl sodium sulphate, a pulp resin soap, an alkyl naphthalene sodium sulphonate, or sodium oleate or like soap. Polyglycol laurate, and polyglycerol stearate are examples of non- ionogenic compounds which hydrolyse in alkaline solution to form surface-active anions. The proportion of cation-active substance may be as low as 0.001 per cent. of the weight of the viscose. In an example, an aqueous solution of octadecyl pyridinium bromide is added to an aqueous solution of Turkey red oil. Caustic soda solution is added. A small amount of the clear solution is added to viscose and the mixture is extruded into a coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, zinc sulphate, and glucose. Specifications 181,901, 336,250, [both in Class 2 (ii)], 340,564, 363,441, 440,647, 469,817, and 478,774 are referred to.
