Abstract
Water-insoluble filaments, films, or like products are obtained by first reacting on viscose at a temperature not greater than 40 DEG C. with 0.5-1.2 mols. of acrylonitrile per anhydroglucose unit present in the cellulose of the viscose, then ensuring, by cooling if necessary, that the reaction mixture is at a temperature not greater than 16 DEG C., removing suspended matter, and extruding the solution into an acid coagulating bath, whilst the temperature of the mixture is maintained at not greater than 16 DEG C. The filaments obtained have a basis of a cyanoethyl ether of cellulose. The suspended matter which is removed prior to extrusion is mainly bis (b -cyanoethyl) sulphide. The process is applicable to the production of fibres, yarns, cords, monofils, ribbons, or films. In an example, viscose having a salt index figure of 5.5 is cooled to 14 DEG C. and then mixed with acrylonitrile. The reaction mixture is cooled to 10 DEG C. and filtered. The solution is stored under low pressure and then extruded, in the manner usual for viscose, into a coagulating bath containing sulphuric acid, sodium sulphate, magnesium sulphate and zinc sulphate. The cakes of thread obtained are reeled into skeins which are washed until free from acid, and then immersed in a warm aqueous bath containing lauryl pyridinium chloride. They are then centrifuged and dried in air at 40 DEG C. The threads are soluble in 0.8 per cent caustic soda solution and can be used as removable yarns in the production of cut-out and like effects, obtained by printing, or as removable threads in the weaving of fabrics with twistless cotton threads.
