Abstract

547,575. Grinding screw threads. BOOTH, L. B., and BOOTH, M. B. April 28, 1941, No. 5439. [Class 60] In making screw threaded parts the terminal convolution of the thread is removed as shown at n<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 3, by oscillating the workpiece about its axis with this convolution engaging a rotary grinding wheel and imparting corresponding axial pitch movement to the work. The spindle carrying the driving centre c has a part c<SP>1</SP> formed with a thread of the same pitch as the work and engages a detachable sleeve nut d which is held against a shoulder g by a plug h and held against rotation by a screw e. The sleeve m carrying the tail centre is urged towards the work by a spring k. When the work is oscillated in engagement with the grinding wheel the nut d causes corresponding axial movement of the work, this movement being accommodated by the yielding of the spring k.
