Abstract

881,155. Self-tapping screws. ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS. March 11, 1958, No. 7875/58. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXV] A screw comprises a shank 10, Fig. 1, formed at one end with a head 12 and provided, extending axially from the head, successively with a cylindrical portion 14, a portion formed with one or more projections 32 and an externally screwed portion 18. The projections extend radially beyond the root of the thread but not to the circumference of the thread and are shaped otherwise than as a partial extension of the thread. The projections may form one or more rings around the shank and the screw has a thread-cutting portion 20 at its leading end. In use, the screw is to be secured against loss to a workpiece 24, Fig. 5, and is screwed through a bore having a diameter less than the outside diameter of the projections, so that the projections deform the thread 28 in the bore.
