A rotary tool comprises a portion 1 for forming a thread, the portion being tapered towards a drill portion at the leading end of the tool, the drill having a diameter not greater than that of the adjacent threaded portion and less than that of the root diameter of the full thread portion. The tap swages the thread and is relieved at two, three or more portions 3 around its periphery. The tap may have flutes in alignment with flutes in the drill.
