The invention relates to a tight winding-up device for watches, having a winding shaft which is connected with the winding crown by the intermediary of a substantial connecting joint mounted within a pendant tube rigidly fixed to the watch case.
It is the object of the invention to render the passage for the winding mechanism through the watch case impermeable for water, dust and dampness, chiefly but not exclusively, by way of metal elements of said intermediate connecting joint between the Winding shaft and the crown, whereby said elements are removable as well as adjustable.
With this object in view, the invention consists in the novel construction of said intermediate connecting joint which comprises an externally tapered chuck having elastic jaws with internal circular portions adapted to engage the outer end of the winding shaft, an internally tapered sleeve adjustably fitted within the pendant tube and adapted to cooperate with said chuck for clamping said end of the shaft by means of the circular portions of said jaws, and an assemblin screw formed integral with said chuck, the winding crown being fitted over the outer end of said sleeve and being fastened to said chuck by means of said screw which in cooperation with the crown effects also the clamping of the chuck aws.
The accompanying drawing illustrates by way of example one embodiment of the invention. Fig. 1 shows a vertical axial section, and Fig. 2 represents a detail.
Referring in detail to the drawing, 4 represents a portion of the case band in which the movement fits; 5 indicates the glass frame or bezel and 9 the winding shaft. The bezel is fitted to the case band and it presents a notch for the passage of the usual pendant tube 1 fixed in a hole of said case band. I0 indicates the winding crown constructed of a crown body Illa and a crown head I01), the crown body having a central opening c and a depending annular flange d which affords a cavity 6 and a flute-d outer surface s, and the crown head being fitted over the crown body and having an internally threaded shank 1 which projects through the opening 0 into the cavity 6 of said crown body. 0n the top of the crown head which may be shaped in any known manner are provided recesses 9 adapted to engage a tool not represented which is used for assembling the crown and the winding shaft.
The outer end of the winding shaft 9 terminates in a prismatic portion 20, and said shaft is connected with the winding crown ID by the intermediary of a substantial connecting joint mounted in the pendant tube I and comprising an externally tapered chuck 2I having two elastic jaws 22 and 23, an internally tapered sleeve I2 adjustably fitted within the pendant tube and providing a conical seat for said chuck, and an assembling screw 24 formed integral with said chuck and adapted to engage the internal thread of the shank f of the crown head. The chuck jaws 22 and 23 afford internal circular portions 223. and 23a adapted to clamp the prismatic portion 20 of the winding shaft when pressing said jaws inwardly.
The body Illa of the winding crown I0 is disposed on the fixed pendant tube I and bears upon the outer end of the sleeve I2. When tightening the crown head Illb on the screw 24 of the chuck, the sleeve I2 will be pushed downwards by the crown body its so as to press the chuck jaws 22 and 23 inwardly for clamping the prismatic portion 20 of the winding shaft, said jaws and prismatic portion being adapted to undergo little rotatory motion relative to each other about the axis X. In this way solid contact is obtained between the crown ID, the chuck 2|, the sleeve I2 and the winding shaft 9 for rotation as well as for axial movement, while simultaneously useful clearance is provided between crown and winding shaft so as to facilitate the assembling of these parts.
While the represented example shows a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is understood that the structural elements of the device might be mounted and combined in other ways Without departing from the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. Tight winding-up device for watches, mounted on the fixed pendant tube of a Watch case, in combination a winding shaft, a winding crown, and an intermediate joint connecting said shaft with said crown and comprising an externally tapered chuck having elastic jaws with internal circular portions adapted to engage the outer end of the winding shaft, an internally tapered sleeve adjustably fitted within the pendant tube and adapted to cooperate with said chuck for clamping said end of the shaft by means of the circular portions of said jaws, and an assembling screw formed integral with said chuck, the winding crown being fitted over the outer end of said sleeve and being fastened to said chuck by means of said screw which in cooperation with the pendant tube and engaging said chuck to cooperate therewith for clamping the prismatic portion of the winding shaft by means of the circular portions of said jaws, and an assembling screw formed integral with said chuck, the winding crown being fitted over the outer end or said sleeve and being fastened to said chuck by means of said screw which in cooperation with the crown efiects also the clamping of the chuck 10 jaws.
