Abstract

943,191. Ball joints. METALS Ltd. Dec. 17, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1958], No. 40636/58. Heading E2F. [Also in Division A4] A ball joint comprises a ball 6 which protrudes through an opening in the wall of the socket and is forced into frictional engagement with an annular seating 5 around the rim of the opening by an axially adjustable stud or pin 10 mounted in an aperture in the wall of the socket and extending into the socket on the opposite side of the ball from the seating to directly engage the ball. In the embodiment shown the stud 10 is adjusted by a wing nut 13 thereon so that the rims of the stud head 11 and a sleeve 12 contact the surface of the ball, but in a modification the nut and sleeve are replaced by a screw which engages a tapped hole in the stud and the head of which abuts the outside of the socket. Two balls clamped by the same stud may be provided, one at each end of the socket, and the head of the stud may carry a pair of bowed arms to clamp the joint to a support. The stud may be mounted axially of the socket instead of transversely as shown.
