Abstract

547,256. Pulverized-fuel engines. SMITH, D. J., and KENNEDY, D. S. Feb. 19, 1941, Nos. 2259 and 10353. [Class 7 (ii)] In a compression-ignition engine using a paste composed of a pulverized solid fuel mixed with a liquid hydrocarbon, the paste is fed by a reciprocating plunger l along a hollow valve stem d<SP>1</SP>, and is blown through holes d<SP>3</SP> therein into a separate combustion chamber b by the air compressed in the engine cylinder a, which has access to the open end of the hollow valve stem. The mixture thus formed ignites in the chamber b, and the combustion pressure forces back a piston f on the stem d<SP>1</SP>, and thereby opens the valve d, which uncovers passages e<SP>1</SP> leading into the cylinder. A spring g acting on the piston f may be adjusted by a hand wheel h, and the stroke of the plunger l is also adjustable. This plunger may act as a valve covering the holes d<SP>3</SP> until moved back by the compression pressure in the cylinder. Ash in the chamber b may be expelled through holes uncovered by the piston f. In a modification the separate combustion chamber is provided in the piston, the combustion pressure acting directly on the separating-valve so as to open it.
