Abstract

546,050. Treating cellulosic textiles. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and MACGREGOR, J. H. Dec. 24, 1940, No. 18093. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Cellulosic textile materials dyed with direct cotton dyes are treated, to improve the fastness of the dyeings to washing and to impart a soft handle to the materials by applying a solution containing formaldehyde and an arylguanidine or a guanidine salt of an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or of an alkyl ester of such an acid, or containing a water-soluble condensate of such components, and thereafter forming an insoluble condensate on the materials. The use of sym-diphenylguanidine, guanidine adipate, guanidine sebacate and the guanidine salt of ethyl adipate is specified. In examples, (1) a viscose fabric, dyed with Rigan sky blue G, is immersed in an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde, diphenylguanidine and acetic acid, squeezed, dried at just under 100‹C. and heated for 15 minutes at 140‹C. ; (2) a viscose satin fabric, similarly dyed, is immersed in an aqueous solution containing a water-soluble urea-formaldehyde condensate obtained by refluxing urea with aqueous formaldehyde in methanol, diphenyl guanidine, or a watersoluble condensate thereof with formaldehyde, and acetic acid, squeezed, dried and heated as in (1); (3) a viscose satin fabric, similarly dyed, is immersed in an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde and guanidine sebacate, squeezed, dried and heated as in (1); (4) a viscose satin fabric, dyed with Chlorazol fast red K, is immersed in an aqueous solution containing formaldehyde, guanidine adipate and ammonium sulphate, squeezed, dried and heated as in (1). Specifications 429,209, 456,451 and 532,871 are referred to.
