Abstract

Cellulosic textiles and textile materials whether natural or artificial, and cellulosic films &c. are modified by treating them at 110 DEG C. or above with formaldehyde and an acid or an acid-producing substance including ammonium sulphocyanide. The formaldehyde and acid &c. may be applied by simple impregnation or by working the materials in a liquor which may be cold or heated to a moderate temperature, or by printing; after impregnation, the materials may be centrifuged or squeezed, and they may be before the heating dried at a lower temperature; after the heating, traces of formaldehyde may be removed by a simple washing with ammonia, soap, &c. Materials so treated are distinguished by a reduced affinity for dyes or if dyed with substantive direct dyes by an improved fastness to washing, by a decreased tendency to creasing or crumpling, and by an increased resistance to water and a lower shrinkage effect when wetted or mercerized. In examples, the treating liquors or printing pastes contain in addition to formaldehyde, ammonium sulphocyanide, phosphoric acid, sodium bisulphate and potassium tetraoxalate, and the heating is conducted at 120--150 DEG C. in a heated chamber or by passage over heated rollers or through a hot flue or chamber.
