Abstract

Cellulose fibrous materials, such as cotton regenerated cellulose fibres and paper, are dyed with sulphur dyestuffs without the application of reducing agents and caustic alkali by padding the material with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble reaction product of a sulphur dyestuff with a salt of sulphurous acid, and then heating, e.g. to 80-120 DEG C., to fix the dyestuff. The padded material is preferably squeezed before heating. The heating step may be effected with hot air, steam, hot oil, molten metal or hot calenders or with a hot concentrated solution of a salt such as sodium thiosulphate or trisodium phosphate. The wetfastness of the dyeings may be improved by an aftertreatment with a peralkylated polyamine or with a bichromate and copper sulphate. Substantive dyestuffs may also be added to the padding liquor or, alternatively, the material may be predyed with substantive dyestuffs. Examples are given.
