Abstract

545,835. Cathode-ray tubes. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 8, 1940, Nos. 16253, 16254 and 16255. Convention dates, Dec. 2, 1939, Feb. 17, 1940, and April 4, 1940. [Class 39 (i)] In an electron gun for use in a cathode-ray tube the opposing surfaces of the first accelerator electrode and the modulating electrode or an extension of the cathode surface are correspondingly dished and designed so that the field produced between them has substantially no component at right-angles to normal to the emissive surface at any points in the beam. Formulae and methods of designing the shapes and widths of beam are given. For a cathode, Fig. 13, with concave emissive surface 150 the beam is concentrated by the electrodes 120, 130, the surface 120a on the former flowing from the cathode surface. For a parallel or cylindrical beam the lower surface 52a, Fig. 11, is flat, the cathode may have extensions 44, Fig. 5, in line with the lower surface. To eliminate the divergent effect of the aperture 37a in the upper electrode a grid may be placed across the opening. For a divergent beam a convex cathode 23b, Fig. 7, is used. If the electrode by the cathode is not used for modulation its surface 52, fig. 11, may be an extension ot the cathode ; if used as a modulator its potential should be zero at maximum current. If the potential of the modulator electrode is negative with respect to the cathode its surface if produced would fall behind the cathode. In a further form the cathode surface 73a, Fig. 15, is part of a sphere and is carried with the electrode 74 from a ring 76 ; the accelerator electrode 75 is carried by a second ring 77, both rings being supported by an insulator 78. Baffles 87 are mounted behind the heater 83. The surfaces 74a and 74b on the electrode 74 and the surface 75a on the electrode 75 are formed to give the desired field for the convergent beam. When used with deflector plates one of these may have a flange extending towards the other to stop the beam striking the target when suitably deflected. An electrolytic method of obtaining the correct shapes of the electrodes consists in using an insulator plate 65, Fig. 14, carrying bars 66 and plates 67, 68 the latter deformable ; by connection of the bars and plates to an oscillator 69 and potentiometer 70 potentials may be impressed on the plates, an indicator 71 being in a line tapped to the bars 66.
