Abstract
545,004. Free-wheel clutches. ANDREAU, J. E. April 15, 1940, No. 6811. Convention date, April 15, 1939. [Class 80 (ii)] A screw-operated one-way friction clutch has combined with it a free-wheel device, which acts as a pilot and serves to effect the engagement of'the friction clutch. The driving-shaft 1, Fig. 1, has right-and-left-handed screws 4, 4' engaging clutch-plates 6, 6', which, when moved towards each other grip a disc 7 splined to the driven wheel 2. The outward movement of the clutchplates is limited by abutments 5, 5<SP>1</SP>. The disc 7 and the clutch-plates are connected by a freewheel device 3. When the shaft 1 rotates, the free-wheel 3 engages, and the inertia of the wheel 2 prevents the clutch-plates from being frictionally rotated by the shaft, so that they move towards each other and grip the disc 7. When the shaft stops, the wheel 2 overruns, and the clutch-plates, since they continue in rotation, move apart. The clutch-plates and the disc 7 may be of wedge. formation, as shown in Fig. 2, to increase the friction. The abutments 5, 5<SP>1</SP> may be adjustable to vary the extent of movement of the clutch-plates and compensate for wear. The adjustment may be effected automatically by ratchet-mechanism operated by the clutch-plates.
