Abstract

586,108. Mechanical follow - up devices. VICKERS-ARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and WATSON, J. P. Jan. 16, 1939, No. 1478. [Class 118 (ii)] A mechanical follow-up power system comprises a pair of friction clutches adapted to drive an output shaft in opposite directions, and the normally disengaged. displaceable members of which are moved to engage one or other of the clutches in accordance with the movement of an input or control member by means of an element which is re-set to normal position by the output shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, a control shaft 16 rotates through gearing 15, 14 a screwed sleeve 12 which is prevented from axial movement by abutments 13, but displaces a shaft 10 carrying clutch members 17, 18, one or other of which is thus engaged with oppositely rotating discs 5, 6 geared to motor 1. The consequent rotation of shaft 10 drives the output shaft 23 and causes its own axial displacement to the position in which neither clutch is in engagement. A modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprises the use of the cam and scissor-lever devices described in Specification 586,106 for controlling the axial displacement of the shaft 10.
