Abstract

526,314. Friction clutches; follow-up devices. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and POOL, W. J. March 13, 1939, No. 8025. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A follow-up device for controlling the position of apparatus in accordance with the position of a control shaft 1 comprises a hollow shaft 2 loosely journalled on the shaft 1, and a pair of drums 3, 4 loosely mounted on the hollow shaft 2 and driven by power means in opposite directions. Helical springs 7, 8, oppositely wound on the two drums, each has its trailing end secured to an arm 11 on the shaft 2 and its leading end abutting freely against an arm 14 on the shaft 1. The springs are normally held just clear of the drums by the arm 14. On turning the shaft 1 and arm 14 in either direction, one of the springs is allowed to contract on its drum and transmit rotation to the arm 11 and shaft 2 until the free end of the spring overtakes the arm 14, when the spring is released and the drive ceases. A stop 15 limits the relative movement of the shafts 1, 2 and transmits rotation directly if the control shaft is moved faster than the normal speed of the drums or if the power supply fails. The springs 7, 8 may engage the drums 3, 4 externally or internally.
