Abstract

709,104. Tension control device. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 20, 1951 [April 21, 1950], No. 9855/50..Class 120(2) Apparatus for controlling tension in a continuously travelling filamentary body comprises a frusto-conical roller 1, a cylindrical take-up means 12 driven at such a rate that its angular velocity bears a desired supposedly constant ratio to that of said frusto-conical roller, a lever 3a, 3b, longer than the maximum diameter of said frusto-conical roller mounted on an axis 4 intermediate between its ends for rotation in a plane so inclined to the plane normal to the axis of the said frustoconical roller at the larger end of the latter than an cutward prolongation of the axis of said frusto-conical roller beyond the lesser peripheral boundary intersects said plane containing the lever, said lever having two arms and bearing on one arm 3a a smooth surfaced load applying member 8 capable of bearing on and thereby causing at least part of the tension in a filamentary body 9 travelling between said frusto-conical roller and said cylindrical surface and on the other arm 3b a guide 6 adapted to touch alternatively one side or other of the filamentary body approaching said frusto-conical roller through said guide, according to the position of said lever, and thereby to urge the oncoming filamentary, body towards the wider or narrower end of said roller as the tension increases or decreases respectively. As shown, any decrease in tension in the filamentary body 9 permits the end 3a of lever 3a, 3b to descend causing the guide 6 to move the oncoming filamentary body 9 towards the lesser periphery of the roller 1 thus slowing up the feed rate of the filamentary body. Any increase in tension results in the reverse effect. An additional free-running frusto-conical roller 2 is provided which co-operates with the roller 1.
